What is considered a "good" amount of RAM for an everyday use laptop?

Answers:
I'd influence 512MB is the minimum amount of RAM a person should hold. I'd recommend 1GB of RAM

With 512MB, you should be able to run your email app, word processor, Internet, and music programs while single using physical memory (which is fast) and thus not using virtual memory (which is slow).

I recommend 1GB of RAM so that your system doesn't slow down when you run additional programs (video, virus scan, etc.).

To win the correct RAM for your machine at the cheapest price, look in http://www.DealRam.com. If you must buy RAM from a local store, note that it will cost up to 2 times as much. RAM is usually on Dutch auction every week so check your Sunday news article for the best prices.
who cares what is devout. what matters is what your laptop is powerful of supporting. what is your pc used for? i enjoy 1gb in my macbook pro - and runs approaching a charm.

too many variables to answer this cross-question
These days it's 1 GB to run Windows Vista.
It depends on what you're using it for and your operating system.
It depends on what you use the computer for and what operating system you are running.

Here is a general minimum suggestion base on operating systems:

Win 98SE/ME/2000pro: 128Mb
Windows XP: 512mb
Vista: 1gig

Keep in mind these are MINIMUMS base on my experience with these singular OS's. Microsoft has a completely different minimum suggestion, usually lower than what I quoted.
Default=512MB
Good=1GB
Better=2GB
In my assessment.
