Obvious the numbers speak about the speed. 400mbps/8 bytes= 500K or 800mbps/8 = 1MB/s if you saving files to your complicated drive through the cardbus interface than the transfers should be the speed of the hard drive interface which could be somewhere any IDE or SATA drives average about 2.5MB/s
Desktop system could get transfers up to 5MB/s most typical system with those elder system with ATA100 clock surrounded by at only 100K./s ATA133 in the region of avg 300K/s up to highs 500K/s

So, ONLY if you enjoy CARDBUS type card and in Dword( = 32-bit) mode, the speed seem to be high plenty, all the other option are slower than 800Mb/s (please note: 800Mb/s = 100MB/s, dont win these confused. The firewire is 800 Mega bits, and the speeds above are MegaBytes, 1 Byte = 8 bits)
edit: Johsyd(the guy below): Check your math, 400Mbps is no path 500kB/s, its around 50MB/s, and this applies to all your calculation.
