Answer:
You really don't need Vista, if its Vista compatible funds that it works with Vista but not controlled to it. it should say on the system requirements which OS it supports and XP should be one of them. If not, later if you bought your HP laptop at around October 2006 or later, next there's a chance that you received a free Windows Vista upgrade. The upgrade newspaper of Vista is $99 for the basic.
You cant upgrade and carry it free it will cost you $200
You can't get it for free.

I believe the low fall version is going to run you close to $150.00 but you can carry that info off of lately about any software retailer's site, including Best Buy and Circuit City.

The subsequent question is does your laptop hold the horsepower to run it?
I WOULDNT RUN VISTA AND CAKE WALK ON A LAPTOP , IT WILL BE VERSLOW. VISTA TAKES ALOT TO RUN BY IT SELF!!! STICK WITH XP/PRO AND CAKE WALK MORE STABLE ANYWAY!!
Don't upgrade to Vista unless your pc be specifically designed for it. Most laptops choke on Vista.

Just because cakewalk is compatible doesn't mean Vista is required.
Don't acquire Vista and you can't get anything for free at the moment.
if you're thinking of buying a laptop you should check out this site first. they give you a sony vaio laptop for FREE! adjectives you need to do is complete a few rushed tasks for them.
