However, if you do CAD or other type of schematic drawing, or requirement something for heavy number crunching, you necessitate a PC-based laptop. Also, most games are made for PC, not Mac.
At that point, the choice really comes down to cost and how much power you need. A typical, mid-line $800-1000 laptop would probably be fine, but look at firm drive capacity and the amount of RAM. The more, the better, apparently.
Regardless, avoid eMachines and Gateway like the plague. Dell, HP/Compaq, and Lenovo are the better PC brands out here for laptops. Toshiba is "ok" and Acer is going downhill, so stay away from them right now too.
