Recommend a processor?
I want to upgrade to a untried computer after 5 years with my Celeron 900 Mhz desktop PC.
I will use it at home.
I use Office applications, surf the Internet and once contained by a while I convert an .avi movie to DVD. I play some older games as okay.
I want my PC compatible for future innovations.
Which processor should I buy?
It should be economical and strong ample.
Recommendations?

if your looking for a cheap price and good overall characteristic, go near AMD chips. The AMD 64 series are very terribly good. I bought my computer near a AMD Athlon chip over 4 years ago and I use my machine mostly for gaming and it works exceptionally ably (even with topical games).
However, if your going to play newer games, I would reccommend the newer generation of AMD chips, or conceivably even a low-end Dual Core Pentium chip. Those get expensive pretty high-speed though.
Of course, when upgrading a processor, make sure your motherboard and power supply are sufficient to manipulate the new chip.
Either Athlon 64x2 or the Intel Pentium Quad-core. The Quad core is probably your best and safest bet for covering power requirements for a decent amount of time.
Will you be replacing the cpu contained by your existing PC or replacing the entire PC?
If just the cpu, afterwards you need to insure that the cpu is indeed replaceable on your motherboard. Once you've done that, and assuming you can, the cpu will have need of to be of the same pin-type...AM2, 439, etc.

If you plan on running several applications as once, later a multi-core processor (cpu) is best. Pricing on dual-core processors have dropped to the point that I see no foundation not to go beside one.
I personnally like AMD. Intel is fitting too. It's whatever you close to after you've done your research.
Make sure you have at most minuscule 1GB of memory. 512MB is the bare minimum for XP and you'll rapidly need more.

Depends what your thoughts on economical.
The AMD chips are great worth, and i'd reccoment you getting an AMD X2 (Dual core) proccessor, something like a 4400+.
But thats getting a adjectives proof CPU on a budget, The intel's Dual cores aint much better, and cost alot more.
And then you leap into the quad core technology, which own only be released a little while. But you wont pick up a quad core for smaller number than lb150/$300.(In the future these will drop down to dual core prices)
But adjectives proof basically vehicle in computer CPU vocabulary that you'll have to attain a Dual core CPU at least. At lowest 2.0 Ghz x 2

Intel core 2 Duo t7300 should do the trick.
