if the computer will never need to depart your desk, then acquire a desktop instead. you will get more power for your money and more upgradeability. I would single advise getting a laptop if you will requirement to take it to work. otherwise desktops are a better choice for your kind of elevated performance work.
There are some adjectives tips here.
You need a laptop next to processor speed greater than 2 Ghz and at least 2 GB RAM.
Laptops arent that great, you cant add on and remove stuff as well as a computer, so If you want more room, you relatively possibly would not be able to include it, as a computer is big and you can pull apart the insides and up echelon, you would be very lucky if you come across something you wanted to upgrade and could. Go for a laptop, no Vista!
I suggest a Dell XPS. All of the XPS models are great, but if you want "The Best" one go beside this:

Which is a laptop, but it looks like a desktop.
The things you scheduled can be accomplished near just more or less any laptop. If it can run windows, it can run those programs. It of late depends how responsive you want the machine to be. You dont want a rocketship with 2gb of knock against and 2ghz Cpu.
I would advise you to move about with an Intel Core Duo base system, Even though I am a fan of AMD.
I own a the 1.66ghz core duo in my laptop, the smallest powerful one, and its powerful enough to touch some pretty hard gaming. It would be more than plenty for what you need.
The single thing is that laptops arent recommended for storage of vital info, since the heat and movement can spoil the hard drive pretty efficiently. It would be intelligent for you to back up your concrete drive with an external whenever you are doing anything perceptive.

Stay away from dells, I hold seen so plentiful of them fail I would never recommend one for anything. To enlighten you the truth, I have never see a dell laptop that didnt have a problem, not to metion that the route the computer is designed is retarded, lacking masses normal ports, and placing others contained by strange places that dont make sense.
If you do not have need of the portability he is probably right.
