The brand of laptop that you take is not the important factor. I'm going to throw a few cliches at you here. 1."You cant deem a book by it's cover" and 2. "It's what's on the inside that counts."
Seriously, what you want to do is make sure that you are buying the NEXT TO most modern thing out in that. You can go adjectives out and spend 2500 dollars on the brand spanking newest computer, or you can spend 1100-1200 bucks on an outstanding computer that be released six months to a year ago.
Right now what you certainly can't do with out, is a appropriate dual core processor. I can't stress enough that the proper most important piece to splurge on is your processor. You CAN upgrade it later, but it will cost you as much as the computer did to do so. Everything else can be upgraded after the certainty (Ram, Video card, etc.) I recommend an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. These suckers will do just almost everything you could ask for, audio/video rendering, gaming, what have you, and still know how to run security software contained by the background or play music at duplicate time without any slowdown. Don't verbs the Core 2 Duo with the Core Duo, as the Core Duo is an elder, much slower model.
Next what is important is the amount of Ram you hold installed in your computer. Windows vista wishes at least a Gigabyte, (1GB) and I recommend 2 GB. You can't enjoy to much ram. You a moment ago can't. Ram is what stores the most frequently used information on your computer, and allows your processor to access it instantly, without have to read from the hard drive. If you don't own enough knock against, your computer will start to store information to your Hard Drive to a "Page File" and every time your computer accesses it, it will significantly weigh down your computers performance.
Finally, A accurate graphics card with at most minuscule 128megabytes (128MB) of video ram is essential in our time. Windows Vista Requires 128 MB of ram for video, and if your computer doesnt hold a graphics card with onboard Video push, Vista will subtract the memory from your System ram. Personally I dislike both. If you want a polite lower price laptop go dell. If you want a strong ably built very nice laptop, jump IBM. They are higher price but man is it worth every cent. I own one and I LOVE IT. It's night light weight and built strong.
I am using a Fujitsu S Series Lifebook and its super!! It have a weight good option (excellent for travelling), thoroughly reliable (i have not encounter any software/hardware malfunctions), just terribly good for a medium-heavy user approaching me. And no worries, i'm not a paid salesperson from Fujitsu.

I would turn with Sony if you really want a neutral weight laptop. Otherwise, I will turn with a Dell XPS
