I know nil about computers... Well, I own a cable plugged into my laptop to the broadband router. The cable is plugged into a red thing inside the laptop on the right side, not the receiver cable. However, it still isn't working. What else do I need to find internet connection? I'm not trying to move about wireless.

The "red thing" sounds like a Xircom make friends card - that will work to get you onto the Internet. What edition of Windows are you running? (Hint: you can right-click My Computer and click Properties to find out.) What happens when you unambiguous Internet Explorer?
