How do I attach a vhs piece of equipment to my laptop?

A strange request!
There are 2 hurdles to overcome here. First, VHS is an analogue format and the laptop is digital. Second, you have to connect the two together!
I one-sidedly know of no soft solution using just a cable, as the analogue signal wants to be converted to digital in proclaim to play. A quick Google for "vcr to laptop" with the sole purpose serves to make time more difficult!
The only device I know that markedly offers the functionality you require is the Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge.
Essentially, it does the divergent to a device in a disc / DVD player called a "Digital to Analogue Converter" or "DAC". In other words, it is an analogue to digital converter.
I don't know how up-to-date your laptop is, but the Hollywood DV uses a Firewire nouns. If you are not sure if your laptop has such a nouns, check the user manual, device bureaucrat or as a last result filch it to your local computer store and ask them.
The actual use of a Hollywood DV is to convert your old VHS tape into digital video, as VHS is now visibly a deprecated media format near DVD and such like replacing it. It literally act as a bridge between the VHS machine and the computer.
Using the scart output on the VHS, you'd plug surrounded by a Scart to 3 phono cable (I don't think this is included but places approaching Dixons sell them) into the front of the Hollywood DV. A firewire cable runs from the subsidise of the DV to the firewire port on your laptop and hey presto - lb1.99 films on your laptop.
This isn't an elegant or glib to use solution however, but we use the device in the bureau to convert customer's corporate VHS presentations to Quicktime in directive to add to multimedia CD-ROMs so I know it works.
The other issue is I don't know how to hand the Hollywood DV is. We got ours 3 years ago but a rummage on the internet shows some availability.
Please note, that if you live surrounded by the UK and don't have a TV license, you will own to prove to the inspector that your VCR is not tuned in to receive TV and that you enjoy no ariel.

Old technology, most likely your cooperation will not happen unless you capture a audio/video into usb port. check radio shack. gl
You could try and get a wintv card which let you watch/ record tv on your computer. Good Luck

enjoy a look there, u requirement to just input the composite / rgb or use a scart component cable u can go and get em from maplins etc
then of late make sure u buy a invasion device with USB since its a laptop and NOT a pci one
