Sorry, but untill you spend at least $800 on a laptop (laptops are more expensive than desktops), you won't bring back anything good.
You should start sour by saying... I want to do . next to a laptop. Which one can I get for 500? You CAN go and get a decent one for 500. Actually smaller amount. I have purchased a couple bad of craigslist.org for decent amounts.
For that price, try Acer or Averetec; both are dutiful for cheaper laptops
You can also try buying it off of eBay. A lot of inexpensive things in attendance.

For reliability i would recommend an ASUS laptop. one of the merely laptop company's to have a 2 year standard worldwide warranty.
as the others said you wont get a terrifically fast one for that money but it is worth a try

It really depends on you. what do you prefer? what is your brand (IBM, HP, Dell, Apple, Panisonic or Sony)? i am not too sure i can help you next to this one. Just do your homework/research. shop around for the best deal/bargain.
I would recommend the Acer Aspire, I believe it may be $699 though, you could always step with an Inspiron B 130 from Dell, not much contained by quality, but it no problem gets the available job done.
it is possible to get a brand unsullied laptop for $500 but, you are not going to get the speed you want. Most topical laptop runs on window vista and you are going to want at least 1 GB cuz near half of that, vista is going to run too slow. You can also receive 512MB that runs on XP. You can check bestbuy for good laptop. I lately purchased hp pavilion dv6000 serie with 1GB memory/160GB complex drive for 499.99 plus 5% tax. It is a accurate laptop, only piece I do not like in the order of is the battery life span expectancy. Which is only in the region of 2 hours when fully charged Hope this helps. Good Luck!
