Ok,I tremendously much doubt that just preference on your laptop was what cause the problem,unless you have knock a connector out of the hard drive,I even drove over my laptop later year and despite it having a cracked blind it still worked,but that doesn't help you.so the first item I would do is check the website of the manufacturer and procure on to their technical support troop,they will be able to let somebody know you whether the system has "gone to god" or only just having a holiday.
I am doubtfull that the tricky drive is totally croaked,as usually you would have see it coming- slow boot up's,crashes etc for a few weeks before it died,so you may very well be able to remove it from the laptop and restore your health your valuable notes.

Okay, presently that I've gotten my joke out of the process, I'm serious - there are companies out in that that can help you beside data retrieval. My guess is you pinched it and will need professional back to retrieve the data.
no it sounds close to u have a deceased hard drive. u should of back up ur data.
Completely power stale your PC (unplug it from the power socket). Open up the casing and try to tighten the power cord as very well as the IDE cable on the harddrive as well as the motherboard.
I doubt that only because of leaning your harddrive will die unless it is 5 years aged or so.
Unfortunately, that sounds like you broke your tricky drive. If it is broken, a computer repair shop may be able to retrieve some of the facts - but most of it will probably be unrecoverable.
I personally knock my laptop out of the top bunk at school and broke my complicated drive - our tech support guy was single able to recuperate one folder's worth of data (about 5 papers and some spreadsheets). All of my pictures and music be gone though.
It really depends on how badly worn out the hard drive is. The smaller amount damage, the more notes will be recoverable.
Even if you damaged your strong drive by leaning on it... you didn't lose any facts. More than likely your connector get loose or your head actuator broke contained by some way. If it is still below warranty... I would call the entrepreneur and see if they can get it working again (make sure they know you want your data).
i would hold a pro open it up. laptops are a stomach-ache to work with inside. first try installing and booting knoppix http://www.knoppix.org/ and run that and see if your drive appears

Forensic easier said than done drive recovery is hugely expensive.
Start with calling the PC inventor and talking to their tech support. They will amble you through diagnositic steps to determine if the hard drive is limp. If it is, then your single route is forensic recovery, or departure of all hope.
Lesson for the time: Back up all your personal files to cd.
A number of both freeware/shareware utils exist which can reload the boot sector in need damage to rest of drive... Norton Ghost have some nice diag/recovery tools and I think you can download a free/limited term/functionality trial copy... And of course, you have all the prized stuff backed up to DVD-RW?!?
Check the website of the drive factory owner (Seagate,WesternDigital, Fujitsu, Maxstor, etc for diag utilities)

try booting from the install discs. if that doesnt work well uuhh i cant really facilitate it sounds like you physically broke the drive. if it in recent times crashed you can put it in te freezer overnight and after put it inside an enclosure and try to go and get files off it
not even GOD can oblige you now....but the geek squad can-call best buy and sk for the geek sqaud-they will know exactly what is going on
