Slow laptop?

I own a Compaq Presario 1245 that originally came next to win 98.(dont worry, its not my major computer!!). I put in a bigger tricky drive and installed XP, which was nice, but slow as hell. Someone suggested I downgrade to win2000, motive it wont slow me down as much. Win2000 is alot quicker than XP, but still pretty slow. I never really used it that much back when 98 be on it, so I dont remember if it was any quicker. So I guess my press is would it make a noticable difference surrounded by speed if i go stern down to 98?

Answer:
Hmmmmm.... those compaqs don't fair in good health with Windows XP (the Presario 1245's typically merely pack a Pentium II processor at 333MHz with 64 to 128MB of RAM and small sturdy drives.) Any processer under 500MHz does not do XP (or 2000) authentic well. The best point to do is stuff as much RAM into that laptop as it will hold. RAM makes the biggest difference within computer performance.
