If your keyboards are so old that they pre-date USB and you're using an adapter instead, afterwards this often doesn't work as the the ivories doesn't send the right sort of signal to the computer, even if the physical nouns has be made. You should check that the keyboards are compatible with USB (and next to the version of Windows you're using, of course).
The single other thing that comes to mind is that if your laptop is mature and the keybs fairly untried, then it's possible (although unlikely) that the USB ports on the laptop one and only support the older 1.x standards and the keybs are 2.x. However, most 2.x things are backward-compatible so this isn't probably the sense.
I don't think you entail to change any settings or use any 'special parts'. Might want to try another USB port, though, only to rule out the possibility of the port having one-time. Also, if you have a USB hub that you're connecting through, try connecting directly.
Depending on how infirm your laptop/keyboards are you should be able to freshly plug-n-play...
with laptop stale plug usb receiver within. turn on and it should find the hardware and install drivers if using XP.
