Is a laptop Worth the money?
Answer:
Getting a laptop is really in the order of preference.
Some culture like the mobility and the competence to connect wirelessly at hotspots using a laptop. Some people travel seriously and they need a laptop more than a desktop.
While others prefer a desktop because it is easier to assert hardware-wise, and they don't need the computer everywhere they progress. I for one have both but I do find myself using the desktop more. I use the laptop because for conservatory they use e-books and it's hard for me to sit at my desk and read chapter of the book for long periods of time. With my laptop, I can lay down on my bed and be more comfortable to read the e-books.

It depends on your situation. I am a college student, and a laptop is much better for me than a desktop. But if you don't entail a mobile computer, and it just is going to sit at home, its much smaller amount expensive to buy a desktop.
I have a Dell, and hold never had a problem near it. Great warranty.
Those are both actually personal question.
"Is it worth the money?" - Do you need the portability of a laptop? If not, no. You could but a more powerful desktop and a web-enabled palm or phone for just about the same money. If you're someone close to me, my laptop goes everywhere near me for both work and school, so it's worthwhile.
"What open-handed should I get?" - What will you be using it for? You can do OK near most manufacturers, but the switch is to define how you'll be using it, find models that come upon your needs, consequently search for reviews on those fastidious models.
