Check your AC adapter - voltage check w/ multimeter
If it checks out, your dc powertap may be broken or the DC-DC circuit on the motherboard have failed. DC powertap can be fixed, DC-DC circuit flop requires replacement of the motherboard on that model of dell.

Does the screen show any point at all?, if you merely get lights that come on for a few second and no screen than it shuts down, later it could be one of 2 things, 1) bad power supply or 2) impossible mother board. You might be looking for a new mother board as the power supply is integrated into the mother board.
Dell purely sent me a new power adaptor for my 1750, free basis my laptop was underneath warranty. My battery wasn't charging bring the power adaptor was discouraging. Now everything is working as good as hot. Good luck!
