My friend's sister, who will be past its sell-by date to college soon, was going to carry the dell color laptop, but instead she got another one because it is better. It is the Dell Vostro 1700. It have Core 2 Duo fast processors, big complex drive, 17 inch screen, and DVD -rw drive. The Vostro chain is made for small buisinesses so:
the are powerful but cheap, they have no trialware(like free AOL for 6 months) and are drastically good. check it out here:

she get the second one thats $899
Dells and Toshibas are by far the best in my evaluation.
Whatever you do - don't get a Macintoy.
dell is ok, and if you want one beside a year warranty go beside that.
If you want a cheap laptop, go to newegg and look for an ACER laptop near 512mb ram. Then buy a 512mb run into stick and install it yourself. This will save you hundreds of dollars!
Watch out when buying a laptop, salesmen and websites similar to to throw in extras. Buy what you inevitability and get out, you can bring accessories cheaper at other places.
IBM Thinkpad/Lenovo variety very nice Laptops. They are extremely reliable. But they tent to cost over thousand.
If you something decent and not overprice. run with Toshiba, HP. I don't really recommend Dell. Acer net pretty nice computer also. they are around $500-600.
I think the Apple Macbook is the best. It is vigorous, and doesn't get virus.
According to Cnet Dells are the most popular sellers. A right choice for you would be the Dell 1520.
