Answer:
replace everything surrounded by the tower
Chances are that the hardware will not run XP, even a stripped build. If your willing to attempt it though later don't try to "upgrade" the installation. Do a complete reformat and fresh install of XP.
Windows XP requires a certain amount of processor speed, and strike memory size to operate properly. Go to Microsoft.com and see if your laptop meets these minimum requirements.
I get a free laptop from this site, I highly recommend it!
sorry not gonna ensue... ... first of all. the processor will be instrument too slow to support XP (the fastest processor for the Compaq LTE 5380 series is 133MHZ) not to mention that even if you had the maximum amount of memory the laptop can bar (which is 72 to 80 MB) (it comes with 8 or 16 MB installed expandable to 72 or 80 MB)... oh and let talk in the region of the hard drive... if it still have its original HD... after XP wouldn't even fit on it... the Compaq LTE 5380 series comes with a sturdy drive that is 2.16GB... and Windows XP uses just about 2.2 to 2.5 GB.. .. lolol.. the processor and memory alone will prevent you from getting this done.

sorry but not gonna happen.. :-(

time for a serious workstation upgrade... hell you can find 500 to 800 MHz laptops that will run xp for very cheap. look on eBay... lately make sure to read the fine print in the past bidding. :D
