If it is a new laptop, you really won't lose much batter expectancy by departing it plugged in. My different IBM is even smart enough not to other charge it up to 100% - sometimes only 98% so it give it a break.
About once a week, I let my laptop battery-operated go completely comatose and then recharge it. It seem to extend the battery duration.
