How much processor(GHz) power should a notebook computer own?

don't let citizens fool you. It's not all nearly the processor clock speed. Look at the front end bus, video card GPU speed, cache on your components. Clock speed on the processor vary from product and company.
AMD 2GHZ, for example, may feel approaching an Intel 2.5 or even a 3.0 GHZ. Look for dual core, or multiprocessor, as most new computers will own these installed anyway. If you buy a new system, and it's running Vista next to Aero, it's going to be pretty fast, but double check the supplier and manufaturer of the product. If you get a Gateway, for example, the hardware may not be as apposite as if you got a HP, Sony, or Toshiba.
You can do what you are looking to do on practically any system. For the medium, maybe look for a nicer graphics card, and for the audio, compare the systems nouns cards.
Gaming is less related to the processor, but since you don't want games afterwards we'll move on.
I recommend gettinga Intel Dual Core 2, 1.6Ghz and above, next to 1GB of RAM.

My laptop is a Dell Latitude D610 next to 512 MB RAM and a 1.6 GHZ Centrino processor, running XP Pro SP2.
Most of my tasks run just fine on it (even PC games).
