Answer:
Reboot your system when it is coming up hit the f8 push button continuosly in approximately 1 second intervals. You will carry a menu with alot of option. choose last certain good configuration. Pick a date when you know the computer be working, but not too old so as to lose your recent documents and information. The computer will do the rest. Good luck.
when logged on, while your computer is showing you your wallpaper only.. press Ctrl, Shift and Esc at impossible to tell apart time to bring out the task regulator. Click File then New Task(Run).
type surrounded by services.msc, there's a list at hand of services. Look for
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and Remote Procedure Call Locator.. Make sure they are both started and are set to Automatic not Manual.. you may need to restart your computer..

notify me if this is going to work... worthy luck
Press <ctrl><shift><esc> to bring up the task overseer
Click on File menu, new project (run), in that area type:

XP's system restore will interface will come up. Choose the most recent restore point to restore to. Reboot your computer if instructed to do so.

So rugged to know what is going on without seeing your computer..
A couple of things come to mind... Did you set Extended Desktop by any occasion on your laptop? Ie, did you have another display attached just now? It might be stuck in a abnormal state. Try attaching a CRT and see if you can see your icons again.

Virus?

Bad Memory dimm? Mine go bad lately and it was doing something similar.

Another way out is to try to go into Safe mode and see if you can boot into that state properly.
