Check the master volume on the 'All Programs' menu.
all programs> accessories> entertainment> volume control.
what variety of laptop is it? on my sony vaio you have to press the "Function (Fn)" switch while hitting the volume up button :)
There might be a mute button, if there's a volume icon surrounded by the taskbar, does it have the red circle beside a line through it? If so click on it and untick the box axiom "Mute".
It is possible the driver needs to be updated or uninstalled/reinstalled, don't know what os you are using, but walk to device manager, right click the audio driver and next update driver and if that doesn't work then do it again, but choose uninstall driver and next it should automatically recognize and reinstall it but if it doesn't be in motion to add hardware and follow the prompts it will find it afterwards.
