I've had a Toshiba Satellite for 5 years presently and it's still going strong. I keep it plugged into the D most of the time and the battery is still apt if I go out. A bit more expensive than an Acer but you grasp what you pay for.
I'm pretty smiling with my toshiba. I know a couple of truck drivers that had their acers shift down on em because the shock of being bounced around surrounded by the cab. I've dropped my toshiba stale the bunk and no problems. It's a satellite and cost about a impressive. Good all around component.

I've had my hp laptop for 3 months in a minute, so far so good. The design is awesome and the execution is superb!
First, I like Toshiba. My second choice is HP. I'm OK next to Gateway, Compaq and Acer. Personally, I think that Dell laptops are cast-offs. I've been told that Lenovo are cast-offs. (the old IBM Thinkpads be great). But SONY, let's not go near exploding batteries.
Keep within mind that with Windows Vista, you want 2GB of RAM.

The simply possible thing that could be a problem near Dell is you picking the wrong components. Ive owned at least 5 Dells, and none enjoy had any issues to speak of.
I don't really assistance about the entrepreneur because i really care what is within it such as how many knock against the type of processor and etc. Your dad acer is awesome probably because the hardware inside are up to date. But I preferred you go beside alienware they have the best hardware inside and you will experience a computer to the fullest. Hope this help :).

Dell is a top name, and becuase of their inventory direction, they can afford to keep cost down, and go good laptops for smaller quantity money than any other mfg I've ever seen! I"ve done like mad of comparisons for desktop systems out there (I used to build them for individuals and small businesses), and Dell consistently have the best systems for the best price, and I'd use them as a guideline of what to charge my customers. But consider too, what you'll be doing with your notebook/laptop; there's tough/shock resistant models out at hand; Panasonic I think make the toughest one... the toughbook! It's pricey, but built with US Govt Mil-Specs!
I live outside the US right immediately, so the easiest/cheapest for me to buy was an Acer, it be cheap, but realistically, it's a cheap laptop; Aspire 5050-3371... it's got an AMD Turion 64 MK38 processor @ 2.2Ghz, next to 1Gb RAM, but has integrated video (sucks surrounded by any computer), and shared RAM for video (sucks in any computer). These two things are the worst culprits for slowing down a system! I put XP Pro on it, and if flew! downloads for my acer be available on the acer website... I paid $480.98 (off ebay; INCLUDING SHIPPING) for this system, so I'm glad with this notebook, for the money... The same point would have cost me $749 at our local Walmart. But really, I'd hold had to earnings about $1200 for a honourable notebook (from Dell, or anyone) configured the way I'd really similar to it! Remember; a dedicated video card, and ample RAM is far more critical than the fastest CPU! If I could have gotten it; I'd fairly have have a used 1.7 to 2ghz Pentium M notebook, with 1gb RAM, (hell, even 512Mb to start), a unswerving Video Card (AGP or PCI-E), and Win XP Pro... that'd beat the pant off most latest notebooks, and at partly the cost!
Thing is, if you want a fast notebook, consequently look for one that has its' own video card, not integrated video... next look for 1Gb RAM using Windows XP Pro or Home (the only difference is finance networking; XP Home can't log surrounded by to certain networks (we're chitchat large enterprise business networks!). Check out www.tigerdirect.com; look at their refurbished notebooks/laptops... And oh; to adjectives of you who don't know, Alienware is owned by Dell! and there's not much difference (besides cosmetic) from a dell xps and a top end alienware gaming machine).
As for me, I'm taking Vista sour mine, and installing XP Pro... until I get used to Linux, after I'll be free of the evil empire forever!

I enjoy had great experience near them. Had poor experience with COMPAQ.
dell have improved its durability next to its new laptops, acer is also well-mannered, toshiba
