it keep displaying the message that it has "encounter a problem and needs to close".
should i try system restore?
does anyone know of a bearing to get around it or what i should do to solve this problem- apart from flinging it out the glass

Yes, best instrument to go is to restore the system as it be on a date that it still worked well. If that does not fix it you should unlock it and reinstall the program.
If want you could try a full windows restore, it does own a large occasion of working but then you would lose adjectives your saved facts. so i would only use it if you own tried everything else!
I wouldn't do a systems restore. That probably wouldn't solve anything. You would only want to do a system restore if Windows itself be having problems. You didn't say-so whether or not you had other error messages when running other programs.
The wonderful thing to do, is to run a virus scan, if you hold internet access, try an online virus scan. Also, run a spyware program to see if there is some type of spyware/malware program on your system. Spyware and malware programs usually use naming conventions similar to window system files, so that ordinary computer users are tricked into thinking they are regular system files.
If this doesn't solve your problem, consequently uninstall works from the add/remove program in control panel, reboot your system after the uninstall, and next reinstall works from your cdrom, if you have it. You didn't mention what build and model of laptop you have, so I can't speak about you if the backup programs to reinstall may be in a invisible partion on your hard drive.
You could try removing works and next reinstalling it. Maybe it got corrupted.

System restore may give support to by going back to a previous restore point if you own one created. If you have system restore turned stale, then you are SOL on that front.
