go beside a dual core processor, 2GBs of ram, and if you can look for a dyed-in-the-wool graphics card.
Just a quick correction, its RAM (Random Access Memory) not 'RAMS' :D.
To play games resembling Halo and Counter-Strike 1.6 you wont need to much, however if you want to play Counter-Strike Source Half-Life 2 etc etc you'll entail more.
To play games on a laptop I would recomend you get a dual core or core 2 duo, spawn sure the laptop has DEDICATED memory which will be any an ATI or nVidia card instead of onboard memory (which will probly say something similar to Intel 64mb Intergrated Memory - you DO NOT want that). If you can try your hardest to get an XP laptop, except make sure you own AT LEAST 1Gig of RAM for vista. I don't know how important gaming is to you but intuitively I wouldnt recommend a laptop for gaming because it lacks the ability for principal upgrades like a desktop to maintain you up to date with the best. One second thing, a laptop that will do what you want will cost surrounded by excess of 1200 easily, purely a heads up.
I would budge with AMD x2 processor(DUAL CORE)

Go with 2GB of RAM to be on the safe and sound side
From what you say, you are looking for a gaming contraption. Most high expire games are graphics intense, and processor hogs.
1. For your money, get a pentium processor. Get the fastest single core processor you can afford. A 3.4 Mhz single core processor will play games faster than a 1.8 Mhz dual core processor, because most games are designed as single threaded applications. This may translation in the close to future, but if you hold a good, nifty, single core processor, it really won't make much difference. But if you really want a ton of stuff running at indistinguishable time, then obtain a fast dual core $$, or even a quad core $$$.
2. Afford as much Ram as possible. More of the application can be loaded into system strike, which the processor can seek faster than have to seek information from your frozen drive, which means more fluid winter sport play. (2gb minimum, but try for 4gb, or best yet 8gb)
3. For optimum video running, get at least possible 256 mb of dedicated video strike. That may become obsolete a few years down the road, but you can other replace your video card if, and when the time comes, but for now, is more than all right for smooth graphics. (High end video cards don't come cheap $$)
4. Also, for gaming, and movies, on a laptop, the bigger the display, the better. Get an HD1080 display.
Follow these rules, and you will most definately not run into any problems. For a laptop next to these specifications, look foward to spending upwards of $2500. Buy one new refurbished for smaller number. My refurbished Vaio is an enviable machine, and it's as described here for of late under $2000, and it includes a Blu-Ray drive as in good health.
