Try holding the shutdown buttom for 10 secs or so, it will shutdown..if that doesnt work, take out the freestyle
On most laptops, if you hold down the power button (5 to 10 seconds) it will shut off.
Try holding down the power button for 10 second. I am using one as I type. If that doesnt work you could remove the battery.
If holding down the power button for 5-10 second doesnt work.unplug the power cord and pop out the battery.

most laptops can be forecefully shut down by holding the power button for 3-5 seconds or until it go off. otherwise a forceful shutdown surrounded by windows xp can be done liek this

Its probably not a good belief to turn the computer off surrounded by the middle of an update. It might not boot back up.
My Dell computer does one and the same thing on moment. I sometimes hold the power button down for several seconds (usually just about 5). If that does not seem influential, remove the battery. Just be sure that it's not plugged into the wall because the power will still flow and it will not shut down.
Do this sparingly as it can "confuse" the computer.

Besides the other suggestions to press the power button for more or less 10 seconds, be aware that depending on the number of patch to be installed and your Internet connection speed, the entire process can slickly exceed 5 hours.
