I enjoy a HP laptop computer and my SD Drive and my cd drive is not recognize anything?

I tryed to play a cd within my computer and tried to download a thing to my computer within my CD drive but it is not registering anything within the drive. Then I tried to put a SD chip in the SD drive to put my pictures contained by the computer and it would not rregister that we put the chip in the computer. What could be wrong next to it and how do i fix it?
