Should I consider college and buy a laptop (over a desktop)?

I'm buying a computer as a sophomore surrounded by high arts school. If I buy a laptop now, I'll be using it as a desktop for the subsequent 2 years but I'll be able to run it with me to college. Couldn't I lug a desktop or would I need something portable to purloin into my classes or would I be getting a newer one by then?
