Yes, surrounded by fact heaps of my hard drives hold had information on them for several years now. As long as near isnt any damage or corruption to the drive, afterwards your data is pretty safe and sound.

There are functioning harddrives within early PC-XT's from almost 1985 that are still OK (there are also floppies from the same extent.) The greatest risk in portables that does not exist contained by desktop machines is more chance of dropping the section.

If you store your portable drive within a environment that is not subject to extreme warmth changes, I don't see why not. Moreover, while not a strong drive, R/W DVDs wills store 4.7 gigs of info and if you don't scratch them, I see no basis why they couldn't last a lifetime.
