Answer:
Your investigational machine's HDD of 120 GB must be your Master drive now. This is prefer by the jumper setting at vertebrae of the HDD near the bus cable inlet.

Your older HDD would be of the same Master configuration. If two Master HDD are present next there will a problem for the processor to identify which is Master. So, move the jumper settings of the recently added HDD for slave. The jumbper settings will be displayed at the back of the HDD itself.

After this, your recently added HDD will be detected and should work fine.
You may need drivers for the HD. Try going to the thorny drive manufacturers website to see if nearby is anything you're missing. I.E. Maxtor hard drives requirement to be setup with Maxblast.
Make sure you own the jumpers on the subsidise of the hard drives right. Youd want your 120 see HD to be master while the 40 GB would be the slave drive.
It may sound dumb but, net sure that you have the drive set up as Master and Slave. Check the complicated drive itself for the proper pin settings.
the e-machine is not dual bootable. what is the OS on the 40 gig drive?

i did like thing beside my e-machine. make sure the jumper on the 40 gig drive are set to "slave" and you can use it for extra storage minus reformating it.
Set the old one as slave, look at the posterior of the drive it shows you how to move the jumper.
Your jumper could be wrong, also the drivers may need to be updated for Vista to run your antiquated HD, Make sure your connected up in the rite proclaim of process. Good luck, You should have be able to answer this cross-question on your own if you have the acquaintance to open the comp. up you should know what your doing first. Usually the simplest answer is where on earth you need to start first. Don't over complicate the problem...
