First, you want to be paid sure you have itunes installed on the computer...save, go to www.apple.com to download it.
Secondly, don't do "append new hardware". Just abolish that. Once you have itunes downloaded, it should detect your ipod. I'm guessing it's the first time you've used one?
This probably routine the hardware (the iPod) was already installed, so basically open iTunes and sync your iPod. (I am assuming that you are going to use iTunes)
Open itunes to start working. You'll see on the heave hand side an ipod deity.

hold u try to install the itunes? if u install the itunes n when u connect the ipod to the pc, it will detect the ipod 4 u....
turn to tunes go to up date ipod and it should read aloud update and then check stays

if not, install that first through the cd you get with the ipod or install it through the internet at http://www.apple.com/itunes/
Leave it plugged contained by and wait 30 min. Chances are the battery-operated needs to draw from up to a certain plane before you can connect it. You might purely have to reset it, which is done by holding the menu and center knob at the same time for 5-10 sec.

after you hook up your ipod to your computer...your ipod will read 'do not disconnect'.
at that point overt itunes which is under 'start' menu.
in a minute wait for few second and your itunes will automatically find the ipod and bring it up on the itune screen.
