How do you identify pin 1 of an IC chip?

Answer:
If it is an behind the times 2 sided DIP (dual-inline-package) it will have a small circular depression on the top not here corner indicating pin1. It might have a round white dot instead of the depression.
In todays square packages beside pins on all four sides nearby still can be a round white dot or circular depression on the package top. SOmetimes nearby is a notch within the square package. Orient the pit on the top left side as you look at the pack and pin one is closest to the notch.
