How can i speak about how big of a rugged drive i can put within my compaq presario 5415wm?

you can put the biggest firm drive you can find with no problems
economically harddrives are all preety much duplicate size so you can put as big of a hard drive as you can afford
but you want to receive sure your comp can run to hard drives
by the opening you described it it sounds like it should be capable of
go into the bios
it may relay you there

Assuming u go through the manual that come along and found nothing, here is how you do it.

Try checking the website of the mainboard to see if it supports SATA 1 or SATA 2. If solely SATA 1 is supported then step for a 160GB HDD @ 7200RPM ; if both are supported or only SATA 2 is supported later go for any a 250 GB or 320GB HDD @ 10000 RPM. Please donot install HDD any larger than this as it will adversely affect the performance of the 5415WM.
Go to Bios by pressing F2 Key or DEL Key when booting.

Check for drive configuration if u press enter u can find the size of the strong disk
