The main problem is that although the Ethernet cable is plugged surrounded by, windows does not know how to use it. The driver will pass it the instructions on how to use it, though different devices require different instructions. Hopefully this helps. Good luck.

Yeah most end users devise they know what they are doing when they reinstall an Operating System. Your frined forgot to retain copies of the software drivers for these devices. Normally PC manufacturers will place a folder on the computer call drivers.
Your friend will have to at least possible get the Ethernet driver so that he can attain the rest of the drivers from the manufacturers website.
