P.S. In overnight case you are wondering, I got my desktop within 2001 (yeah i know its old, lol), its a compaq presario. i dont own the model no. to hand.
Answer:
You can any:
a) buy a network card and install it (if you hold an open PCI slot)
b) buy a USB wireless receiver/transmitter (if you enjoy a USB port)
c) buy a USB to ethernet convertor
Is you don't mind a 54 Mbs connection, in that are small usb devices you can get that connect you to the Wi fi. Really handy stuff, but study out on the security aspect. You may want extra software to cover that, but the small usb Port devices that connect you to Wi fi are currently going cheap at various places including Tiger direct, and Compusa
economically u could buy an ethernet card for $20 bucks and easily install it into your motherboard which will support it via PCI or if your desktop have a wireless card (which im assuming it doesnt) then you could creat an ad-hoc grating computer to computer google it for more info
My comp. is also a dinosaur, from 2000, but over a year ago, I took it to the computer guy in town, who installed an ethernet card for going on for $15 so I could get cable internet. Long live dinosaur pcs!! :)
Unless you've done some serious upgrading to that laptop you're going to be sorely disappointed after you catch connected. Have you tried surfing with a dial-up nouns. I doubt that you will get much done online near that laptop.
So I'm saying here, if you get some coins, buy a newer laptop and don't get caught buying piece-meal upgrades that will eventually cost more than a newer laptop.
Get a ethernet PCI expansion card for the desktop.
