add knock against
a lot could be done
how did it start to be slow ?
stick the Windows disk within and format your hard drive-
if its a window, go to control panel, click presentation and maintenance, after click rearrange items on your knotty drive to make programs run faster, after click analize, just do what it say from there on
preference 2: get more memory
Check for spyware and try defragmenting your easier said than done drive.
I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and grasp AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry,

You might run your Anti-virus scan.

Go to START and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and turn to the startup section. Uncheck the programs that you do not requirement. Keep your Anti-virus checked.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
Adding more ram usually is the best fix. If you own less than 512 after I would get it at lowest to that. Reason why is that windows XP usually uses going on for 400 meg of ram. If you hold only 256 after your computer has to use your disk for virtual memory. DISK ARE SLOW compared to RAM.

If you hold Windows vista i recommend a gig and a partially of RAM. It is a memory HOG.

Hope that helps.

Plus, run antivirus programs and antispyware programs.
My suggestion would be is more RAM, but be warned do not exceed your RAM over your comps CPU speed or your motherboard may burn. Your second selection and a lot cheaper is goto Start>Run>msconfig>startup>tak... the checkmarks rotten any unecessary programs (if taken off from computer startup the OS wil not use it until opened)>Click Apply/Next>Close>Accept the Restart Prompt and you WILL see a dramatization boost. You can also try disk defragment, which will reorganize everything from your HD into an organized manner, which will allow your computer to hope information more quickly thus increasing activities (this method also increases the life-span of your HD).
HI, I'M NO EXPERT TECH BUT HAVING HAD SUCH PROBLEMS I WILL PASS IT ALONG AND HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU
1) GET RID OF ANY UNCESSARY PROGRAMS (ALERT; MAKE SURE NONE ARE PART OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM

2) CLEAN DISC 3)DEFRAG 4)CLEAN OUT CACHE 5. CHECK TO SEE HOW MANY ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAMS YOU HAVE INSTALLED. TOO MANY WILL NOT ONLY SLOW YOU DOWN BUT KEEP CATCHING EACH OTHER AS SPYWARE. 6) CLEAN OUT TEMP FILES

THESE ARE JUSTPOSSIBLE SOLUTIONS. AGAIN WHETHER OR NOT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THAM

GOOD LUCK!
