Answer:
I can't utter I would upgrade that PC, it's to old. You could however look for the monitor and drives out of it and invest in a hot home built. Building is the cheapest method The first link have an 800.00 entry level gaming rig, I know you said 300.00 but at lowest possible give it a look for the adjectives.

If you do go this route, read wisely first they do your shopping.
for that much money buy you a new computer
you can't carry the FSB PCI with P3.
or 98 OS.
FSB is front side bus, that process multiple the processors speed byth PCI bus speed, FSB has double one for positive cpu clock and one for denial clock.up down
anyway if the bus speed is 100meg, then FSB is 200 times the processor MEG heritz,
pentium 3 cannot do this. its outmoded and two slow, PCI 66meg heritz.
even the ram is timied to the PCI bus speed.
for $400 you can buy a 400 mega heritz bus beside FSB of 800 megaHeritz., the ram would be timied for this PCI bus.
laggy winter sport can be also the ISP dail up, even cable with dignified speed has wadding in video, if your computer is slow.
if you shop around...especially on the web, you could probably just win a new laptop for that price. Just forego the monitor. tower keyboard mouse I get mine over a year ago (hp) 3700+ processor speed, 200gig hard drive, 1 see memory. media driven system for basically a little more than you hold now.If you shop smart you could do a moment ago fine. Don't waste your money on upgrades. Just keep hold of all the cast-offs off your laptop songs, videos, clear your temp files, cookies, verbs your hard drive and defrag regularly. Store as much as you can on portable medium devices.

Im upgrading a friends computer that is roughly the same specs.near these small boxes its almost impossible to get a trial motherboard and processor into them because they were not built to accommodate todays huge bake sinks and fans.."my friends laptop, a new motherboard would put the cpu directly lower than the power supply, so were going for a barebones apparatus.."
Your best bet would be to visit a site similar to tigerdirect and find a barebones pc for around $200 (this would win you a pc box next to power supply, motherboard and processor).that will leave you near $100 to get, memory, a not easy drive, and most dont come with a supporter for the cpu so thats about $15-$30 nearby.Since you have a monitor, the ivories, cd drive, this will get you a system you can make the addition of to in the adjectives.
Finding you some links now.
$149 after rebate, covering, motherboard, celeron d processor, power supply, this even comes with 512 mb DDR2 hit!

$29 Fan for cpu

$54 160 gb SATA hard drive.route faster than IDE.

now adjectives you need is a better operating system...
Seriously? Pentium 3s come out before I be born. And '98 isn't much better. You need a unusual system. At least a Pentium 4, 1GB RAM, 80GB tricky drive and a 64MB graphics processor.
