Customized desktop, want to verbs install XP, will computer work if I don't enjoy adjectives driver Cd's?

I bought a gateway within '01. A friend offered to upgrade it a couple of years ago. The original gateway come installed with Windows XP Home, but when my friend upgraded the computer, he installed Windows XP Pro. I couldn't prove the copy to get updates, but he told me not to verbs about it. I didn't focus anything of it, but now it's gotten bogged down w/ virus and spyware over last 2 yrs. I'd to some extent just reformat the firm drive and reinstall my valid copy of windows xp home that come w/ the gateway. My friend changed several things, including harddrives, memory, video card, the processor to a pent 4, and i'm not sure what else. He's not around anymore, and I don't know if I have adjectives the drivers for the things he changed. I do have the video card cd. So, will I be capable of reinstall windows, will the computer be functional plenty so I can go online to download the other drivers? Should i install drivers from the gateway cd even though some of the parts aren't within the computer anymore?

You should be able to of late format the hardrive and reinstall windows, the defaulting drivers are installed at the same time and window should detect whatever hardware you hold on pc.

On a successful installation, i would take home sure you have anti-spyware and anti-virus first beforehand trying to go online.

Example programs, lavasoft adaware/spyware remover/spybot hunt & destroy & avg free anti virus.

Your Gateway/Windows disc may not be set up to do a new install. They usually are for repair and restoring existing systems. Check the i386 directory on the disc for a file name WINNT.EXE. If it it there, you will stipulation to go to Microsoft and download the XP setup disks,(4)floppies worth and follow their instructions.
The rest of the process should work, but I wouldn't install any Gateway drivers unless they're specifically needed.
If this doesn't work, in attendance is another way, using a Win98 boot disk. If you want push for on how, e me and I'll give you step by step instructions.
