Core 2 Duo out of tyhe options you posted - the E6600 is wearing clothes choice at about lb140 or you could travel for the E6700 (more processing power) for about lb190. Buy them sour eByuer for reasonable assignment rates.
I agree with the poster above - Quad Core are the 'best' although not tons programmes come close to being competent to make the most of adjectives that processing power yet, Abd they are completely expensive (lb330 minimum), although the prices are expected to fall on 21st July.

Right now the top of the smudge processors belong to Intel with the Core 2 Quad Extreme QX6850. However, AMD is looking at making a come rear legs with its own quad core processors code name the Phenom. Hope that answers your question.

i say this because of their architecture,they can run at 30v lower than a pentium 4(3.0ghz) but do twice as heaps million calculations, a masterstroke by intel
and near the introduction of qaud-core processors,you will son have no intention to buy a graphics card as the job can be done by your key c.p.u
however this is a long way bad so dont throw away your current graphic card
64bit technology is still pondering along,and the individual real lead of this is if you have xp ,this enable you to use more than 4gb ram,which is currently the maximum amount of memory you can use on a 32bit xp os
the athlon x 2 processors are excellent chips,perchance a bit behind the core 2 duo,s but still up in attendance,very well-mannered gaming platforms(were as the intel core 2 duos are better for number crunching,c.a.d,video editing ect)
however the top points go to the intel core 2 duo,a brilliant processor and breaking chronicles again and again,especially in 3dmark,the video card benchmarking program
