by defragmenting the drive, you will free up space. you've got it *** backwards.
Transfer closely of stuff to a cd or dvd.
I would uninstall or delete un-used programs from your computer that will free up your hard drive space. if you enjoy more questions or concerns please call on my online computer support forum at http://support.mtechama.com/forum/index.
Well your question is really ambiguous.

You want to free up space, you can use the Disk Clean up utility provided by Windows. Or you can uninstall any unneeded software. Also try to delete unused files and files within Recycle bin (if any).

But nothing of this have got anything to do beside Defragmentation.
use a windows optimizer

and copy some notes, music, video off the rock-hard disk to a cd/dvd and then delete them to construct space on hard disk
ctrl-alt-delete close task on everything but explorer and system.scan disk THEN defrag. it could clutch 6 hours and if when scan disk runs and comes up with a message that it have retarted 10 times- do you still want to receive this message answer no and it will complete a thorough scan.
click on start
