My personal expierence and view is simply pentium is way better after amd. I hear AMD went skint, not sure how true this is, never the less ego go near the pentium 4 and you could even upgrade to a 3.2 ghz, at least a 3 ghz. Buying a used cpu is never really a honourable idea. AMDs arent desperate for the money but you get what you salary for.
This cannot be answered without details of the motherboards and devices involved as nearby are so many standards. Whatever though, if you do swap Mobo and processor expect Windows to requirement reactivating or possibly even reistalling.
BTW the fault you mention is more promising memory than the cpu. Download a memory checker and let it run for a while to see if it finds anything that could be cheaply fixed up to that time you do anything radical
Your computer is out dated. Its time to verbs to the dual cores. You mentioned games and most games wouldnt play on such a low spec computer like the one you decribe. You are simply delaying the computers misserable life span. Wipe your hard drive, trade within your computer and get a all right built one.

Take my word for it. Spend the money on a computer that will final. AMD is proven to provide a 12% increase in better see on gamming, graphical interface, and multitasking.
Did you try replacing the power supply? But to answer your question, I would run with the p4.
i dont suggest upgrading to a dual core. at hand only 2.6ghz etc..
i own a 2.7 ghz p4 and its fine for running sims2 etc..
n windows vista.p4 is better
