ATI's lone real assistance over iNidia's card's as of now that I know of is theyr'e GDDR 4 technology (compared to the average GDDR 3). But if you reason about it, iNvidia's card's aren't really going to be THAT much slower later ATI's, or else they wouldn't be at the come first of the industry! And on top of that, iNvidia is more adavanced within term's of actual graphical technology. U can research it... but basically the bottom strip is, ATI's card's have with the sole purpose a minor advantage surrounded by speed, but are somewhat far behind when it comes to graphical capabilites.
So ATI may be somewhat faster, but iNvidia's GPU's almost just as speedily but kick more *** when it comes to graphical technology's.

Stick near a non Ati card no doubt
Ati drivers are buggy as hell and they love to hold random VPU crashes when contained by the middle of a high demanding spectator sport. If you look around you will see a lot of ati crd users trying to chalk up old copy of the catalyst drivers because most of the newer ones are more trouble after they are worth.
I can't tell you the advantages, but i work at staples and a consultant a short time ago came stern from a symposium and she said that NVIDIA is the best.
I prefer Nvidia as they have better support for Linux and update their drivers for both Linux and Windows better than ATI. However surrounded by the past I've owned tons graphics cards from ATI and they've worked well. Use price and features to back guide you. Set a budget, find which cards meet that band, decide if you want to use SLI or Crossfire. This will rigid the field down to managable level. Good luck.
