It sounds a lot close to a virus... Did you get any strange emails?
Probably a system directory has be corrupted. If you have your imaginative install disks, you can insert them and attempt to repair your installation.
Could be because of some new software you not long installed, if you did that. When it's booting up hit F8 before the XP loading blind and choose the Last known polite configuration option.
If that doesn't work, put within your XP disc from your computer manufacturer and do a repossession install. that won't erase all of your files, simply replace the system files that may have somehow be corrupted.
