Windows XP won't shut down?

Everytime I try to shut sour (or restart) my Dell pc running win xp home ed. it go to a shut down screen and a short time ago stays there (like adjectives nite)...I have to manually hold down the power button a few secs for my notebook to shut down...this happens every time...any answers??

Answer:
Hit CTRL / ALT / DEL to widen task overseer to see what application or program isn't responding... then close that individual application. You may have to run a registery cleaner type software to straighten it out.
click START later RUN and type MSCONFIG. select STARTUP and uncheck all STARTUP ITEM after reboot
I had a problem close to this and eventually (a week or two later) on starting the screen would display autochk not found. Checked lots sites, and read that autochk.exe may be corrupted, so deleting the one used and copying another fixed problem.. My XP have four copies .
