Are up to date pentium processors backwards compatable next to elder motherboards?

i own an older 2.8 ghz p4 and ego like to buy one of the untried 3ghz ones. will my comp support this? (dell deminsion 3000) what about ht? if u dont know how can i find out

Answer:
Yes, at hand is a 3.0Ghz P4 available for both socket that Intel has used over the years.

But seriously, P4s be never good, Athlon 64s hold always be better, and even the Athlon 64 has be surpassed by Intel's Core 2.

Go to Dell or HP or something and pick up a computer with a Pentium e4300 processor, it is a lower-grade Core 2 chip that a short time ago uses the Pentium brand, and I promise you it will kill a 3Ghz P4 even though the e4300 "only" runs at 1.8Ghz.
no
Usually not............dance to Dell's web site and find out what motherboard is contained by your computer it should also tell you what processors are compatible beside the motherboard. 2.8 GHZ vs 3GHZ not that big a difference. Get a new motherboard that supports Core2Duo instead.
I would assume no... primarily that the bus speeds ghz and a few other options would verbs that mb is it is not rated for it... prebuilt systems don't usually enjoy very plentiful upgrade options... otherwise how would they engineer money... Do a search on google next to your model number and look for specs or Chat with a dell rep in recent times go to the support page on dell.com and you should be contained by business... if you plan to try it anyway... be sure to have ample on side to purchase new MoBo and processor..

Peace...
Compatible Processors:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor that runs at 2.8 GHz , 3.0 GHz, and 3.2 GHZ internally and 800 MHz externally near Hyper-Threading Technology

Intel Pentium 4 processor that runs at 2.8 GHz internally and 533 MHz externally

Intel Celeron(R) D processor 320, 325, 330, 335, and 340

An Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 will be okay. I'd upgrade the memory too. Dual Channel 800FSB would be PC3200. Much better than the 533FSB 2.8GHz P4.
