Just bought a Western Digital external harddrive, Must I stand it up vertically or can i set it horizontally?

Your "My Book" is designed to stand both ways. The singular thing you inevitability to be aware of is where the cooling vent are. As long as those are not covered you can stack one or more on top of one another or stand the up side-by-side as on a bookcase (like the circuitcity classified ad describes).
I think that the cases are designed to be set vertically, but really you can set them up any direction.
