yep athlon 64 prefer a socket 939 if you hold a board to fit it. Otherwise stick with AMD 64 for any socket.

A 3400+ in a 754 is other for $100.00 but ebay is kind of risky for CPUs.... You never know what you are getting! Gamegiants have the same CPU for $99.95:

You might want to find a 939 mb and CPU then you can upgrade to X2 when the price comes down... A 754 socket tops out at 3700 and no dual cores. It might not be too delayed to back out of your ebay decree....
i just did plentifully of reasearch on this for myself and i ended up getting the Athlon 64 3400+ for socket 754, i be able to achieve it brand new from Ebay for $100 simply search Ebay if your interested this guy i get mine from is selling tons of them.
You didn't say which socket your motherboard uses. If you don't know, you aren't going to be capable of buy a processor. In Socket 939, the best in the $100 selection is the 3800, but that's slightly over: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.as... If you have a Socket 754 motherboard, after the 3400 would be your fastest choice: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.as... But, it's slightly over $100, also. It, however, comes with a free motherboard.
