Why does my WD external drive not turn bad near the button?

I own a MyBook Pro 500GB and when I press the button, it doesn't turn off. It used to, but not anymore. I hold to unplug the USB plug to let it turn rotten, but I don't know if this hurts the drive. I do know unplugging the AC hurts it more. What should I do?

Answer:
Sounds like it's busted, and the single safer way I know of disconnecting it is to shut down the computer it's connected to since disconnecting it.
At the lower right corner of the screen in that is a tray of small icons. Look for the one next to a green arrow w/c says "Safely Remove Hardware". Double click it, consequently click the stop button.
Disconnecting it from the USB won't damage the drive. Unless you're writing facts to it at the second you disconnect it.
