From what you described, it stands to drive the upgrade would not be offered if it wouldn't run. The manufacturer could not afford the desperate press. Keep the junk loads at start up down so you won't use RAM for stuff freshly sitting there, and here should be no problems. I have be running a similar configuration for 3 months, watched video that were down loaded, made movies from clip record with camera, listen to music, did streaming video, etc with no difficulty. Do not use the resource hogs McAfee or Norton Anti-virus that comes beside the system. Get a good trim type resembling Avast, AVG free or PC-cillin. Keep updates current from the maker and Microsoft. You should enjoy several years of good use.
Any journal of vista will run slow on 1Gb of RAM seeing its the minimal requirement. I suggest saving up for another 512mb or 1Gb of RAM.
a laptop you involve 2gd of ram if not stick to xp. expetially being a mass built comp in attendance will be tons of craplets that will drag down performance inadequately. microsoft is allowing manufacturers to still submit xp till the end of the yr closing i heard. you may enjoy to call hp or whoever you bring back a laptop from to get that remedy.
I'm using 1GB and loving it!!
What I recommend to any of my clients before upgrading to Vista is that they run the "Vista upgrade advisor." Its a free download from Microsoft and I will account the link below.

This will report to you what is compatible and what isn't compatible for most any software and hardware on your laptop. It also gives you recommendation.

There can be a few unknown software returns, but for the most part you can turn to the unknown software or hardware manufacturer net site and see if its compatible.

After running this, it will give a nice report and than construct the best decision.

I hope this help, good luck : )
