Repair corrupted files on usb drive?

frenzy!: all of the work and other document files i own saved on my usb drive alone hold become corrupted. the file name have changed to strange characters and i can no longer open them within Word. i have tried to research the problem but not come up beside a solution. one basic suggestion i found be to run chkdsk but it did not run...and i read that this could be because the drive has to be locked but don't know how to do that. another suggestion is to run a mild format which does not delete the files but can restore them but i can't digit out how to do that either. i am awfully stressed...i cannot afford to love these files. does anyone know of a way to restore the files so they can be access normally again? damned cheap chinese rubbish! lol. hopefully this can be solved and i doubt if i will use usb drives again...newly store everything on a portable hard drive (i've ordered one already!). thank you...

Answer:
If the drive is locked, usually near is a physical thing you slide somewhere on the drive itself. It usually have a lock picture by it. If there is nought like that, I don't give attention to you have a obedient chance of recovering those files. Sorry.
