Answer:
If the external HD is connected via USB trial another usb device to ensure that your USB drivers are working properly.

If the HD is set up firewire do the same entry.

If the HD is set up as a NAS then get sure that you have put that computer on the meet people and have allowed the proper sharing / setup that you did when you hooked up the external device since.
You probably have to re-install drivers for your external drive again.
click start, control panel, click classic scenery, select device manager, and look to see if you see any entry with a examine mark or exclamation spot next to it. if in attendance is, right click on it and select properties, then select to reinstall or install the drivers for it. if window can't find any, then you may want to go to the manufacturer's website and download and run them.
If you enjoy put on a fresh installation of XP you will need adjectives the relevant drivers for your hardware.

Try turning off the PC, disconnecting the Drive and rebooting.
Then try re-connecting and see if window recognises it.

Good Luck

one of the first things you want to try is unplug it and plug it back within.
not an expert, but I think you hold to reinstall the external hard drive software on your notebook. Shut down computer, reboot, does it reconize new hardware? if so ..budge from there on easier said than done drive installation.

If that does not work, you may need a driver reinstalled. Ok, ask someone else explanation this is just stuff I would do first back I asked someone else..like my computer multimillion dollar husband...I disgust it when he tells me what to do near my computer

Good Luck
Before it can detect it, there may be a setup peak to ask you to put back the Windows disk to install a driver
It sounds approaching your external hard drive is hooked via USB. Make sure you install the drivers for your USBs.
From Control Panel, Classic prospect, double click on "Add Hardware".
Windows will try to find your drive and either ask you for the installation disk or will use drivers already on the computer.

If Windows does not find it, check your USBs first, and if they are OK, you will necessitate the manufacturers installation disk.
you may own to re-install any software if any cam with the external drive. otherwise, do a rummage through for hardware from the start menu under printers and other hardware. once located install the sytem on it, or you may want to install the full window program on it.
ok well first of adjectives i think everyone above me is wrong and this is what i assume happend
you were wipe your pc and departed the external plugged in and when you get to the partition blind you deleted adjectives partitions and one of them be the external drive if so then you've lost adjectives your data on that drive but you can still capture the drive to work all you necessitate to do is put in the window xp cd again and go support to the partitions blind and find your external(it should be plugged in now) and put together a new hedge on it and when it ask you what size you want to make it next just select the what ever your allowed its usually just typed into the box anyway after hit enter then turn past its sell-by date the pc by holding within the power button for 5 seconds and after turn it on again and leave it boot up properly as average and it should show up in my computer.

There may be a drive letter interfering beside the old external.
This assumes you can hear the Ba-Bing when you plug contained by the USB drive, but not drive appears in Explorer:

In window explorer:
1) right click My Computer, select Manage
2) click Disk Management
3) scroll down on the bottom right window until you can see your external not easy drive.
4) right click on it, and click Change Drive letter...
5) click Change,
6) pick a latest letter.
